The principle is: the more festive the event, the smaller the evening bag. A good style also calls for a balance between outfit and accessories. The norm is simple: sleek dress – eye-catching evening bag and vice versa. The same fashion rule applies to a bridal clutch, by the way. Colour-coordinated combinations are particularly harmonious: In addition to a black evening bag, a silver or a gold clutch is part of the typical repertoire of festive bags for women.

    Is there a difference between clutches and evening bags?

    "Evening bag" is a general term for all festive models of bags for women. Among their different variations classic clutches are handbags. These evening bags have no handles and are kept in the size of an envelope. Clutches are either held in the hand or clamped between the upper body and arm (the name comes from "to clutch"). But more and more models are equipped with a carrying loop or a detachable shoulder strap. There is a simple reason for this: even though clutches are traditionally intended for festive events, they are just as suitable for casual everyday outfits. They have become an all-rounder character and are available in various formats. The choice of materials is also impressive and includes leather, imitation leather, patent leather and polyester. Structured surfaces, including animal skin prints as well as rivets, stitching and other decorative elements create optical highlights. Depending on the layout, clutches appear either elegant or casual.

    Typical evening bags include small shoulder bags with a discreet chain strap or a short shoulder strap and compact versions of the handbags. But the epitome of evening bags are clutches. The classic versions are flat and rectangular. They close with an envelope and with a magnetic or turn closure. The so-called envelope bag with pointed envelope is also one of the classic designs. Elongated clutch handbags in the shape of a drop are less popular but equally universal in use. They are usually equipped with a nostalgic clip fastener. The minaudiere clutch (from french "small handbag for women"), by contrast, is a particularly festive format of bags for women. The small, box-shaped evening bag is made of hard materials such as metal or plastic. The box clutch usually presents itself as square or with rounded edges. For a minaudiere clutch a decorative snap closure is typical. The hard shell ensures safe storage of valuables, which is why this shape is often seen on a bridal clutch, usually with elaborate pearl decorations. A gold clutch belongs also to the popular models in minaudière form. The category "Clutches" includes pochettes – flat bags, which are secured with a zipper. Many models have a wrist strap with a snap hook for wearing on the hand. A larger foldover clutch with a flap cover provides a lot of space. Due to its size and design it looks more casual and is especially suitable for nonchalant events. New interpretations of the classic clutch, be it a lunch bag with a wrap closure or a model with a striking cut-out handle, are also more appropriate for less formal events.
