A handbag is perfect for everyday life and the office, but there is usually not enough space for files or laptops. A shoulder bag is ideal for casual evening events like a visit to the cafe or cinema. Due to their shape, hobo bags often look particularly casual and are suitable for leisure activities of all types. Messenger bags are usually much larger than classic shoulder bags – they can also carry A4 documents. Clutches and evening bags are a must for special occasions.     Bags for men

    Not only women can enjoy the variety of bags. There is also a wide range of shapes and styles among the bags for men, to match classic masculine looks or casual leisure outfits. Among the most common types are spacious messenger bags as well as briefcases for the daily commute to the work. Smaller shoulder bags in portrait format, also called reporter bags, are also among the classic bags for men. Practical fanny packs are also popular.

    Materials

    Bags show great material variety. Depending on the intended use, quality, durability and other characteristics of the material play a major role in the decision-making process. Leather bags have high tear resistance and durability as well as breathable properties. In addition, they are wipeable so that dust and light soiling can be easily removed. However, leather bags should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as the colour can fade. Leather is sensitive to dirt and moisture and has a relatively high weight. Canvas is also a natural material: it is made of cotton fabric and is thus a renewable resource. The material is light, tear-resistant, hard-wearing, skin-friendly and generally (depending on the bag!) machine washable. With an additional coating, bags made of canvas are even water-repellent but dry a little longer than uncoated versions. Imitation leather is usually a textile fabric with a special coating. This makes the material tear-resistant, weatherproof, easy to care for and insensitive to dirt. Imitation leather is not breathable. It is usually lighter than corresponding models made of genuine leather. Synthetic fibres such as nylon and polyester convince with their tear resistance and durability as well as their very lightweight and water-repellent properties. In addition, they can be washed in the machine and dry very quickly.

    Carrying options

    Bags with short handles can be worn at the elbow as well as by hand (handle drop approx. 10-20 cm). This carrying option is typical among bags for women. But be careful: sweat, dirt and hand cream can damage the handles in time, which speaks for carrying the bag in the crook of your arm. Bags with longer handles can be carried over the shoulder (handle drop approx. 20-30 cm). Typical shapes are shopping bags, beach bags and hobo bags. If you shop for bags that you want to carry in winter, you should get a model with long handles, because thick jackets demand a higher handle drop. As the name suggests, the hand strap is a band that is shaped into a loop and is just long enough to be slipped over the hand and worn around the wrist. Typical bag shapes with hand loops are wristlets, pochettes, and – depending on the model – clutches. Bags with long straps (usually removable with snap hooks) are worn over the shoulder on one side (length approx. 60-100 cm). If the shoulder strap is long or adjustable enough, these versions are also suitable for being worn diagonally over the shoulders. This is also called cross-over or cross-body (length approx. 60-140 cm). Typical shapes are shoulder bags and messenger bags. Some bike bags and travel bags are also equipped with a removable shoulder strap.
