    The perfect travel luggage? The one that fits the transport method, travel purpose and duration! Luggage basically means everything that is taken on holiday, on a short trip or on a business trip – from toiletry bags over travel bags to XXL suitcases. There is a difference between softside luggage and hardside luggage. Softside luggage includes duffle bags, textile trolleys, weekend bags, backpacks and rolling backpacks. It is best suited for car trips, as it can be stowed flexibly in the trunk. Many travel bags have stowable shoulder straps and can be carried on the back if necessary. Hardside luggage is the right choice for plane journeys: it can withstand high loads. The classic suitcase with carrying handle is nowadays a nostalgic relic from the 80s. The trolleys with two or four wheels are much more popular. They also look good on train journeys and impress with easy handling and good maneuverability.

    The travel luggage is generally divided into holiday models and business suitcases. The so-called cabin luggage is considered as carry-on baggage and offers a volume of 30 to 49 litres. It is ideal for trips lasting one to three days. Note: Many airlines have individual specifications for the hand luggage size. The standard dimensions are 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (height x width x depth). For trips lasting up to one week, we recommend trolleys with a capacity of approx. 50 to 69 litres: these models are classified as check-in baggage by most airlines. Larger suitcases with a capacity of 70 litres or more are intended for stays of several weeks. For personal holidays and short trips, there are simple variants, also available in colourful designs. For business trips, it is recommended to use solid rolling backpacks as well as high-quality suitcases and trolleys with document and laptop compartments. Some business suitcases are equipped with a garment bag: it protects suits and shirts from dirt and creases. A garment bag with a size of up to 57 cm x 54 cm x 15 cm is normally accepted as cabin luggage. Toiletry bags and cosmetic bags are part of the basic equipment for every trip: they provide practical storage for your care products. Some models come with a removable mirror and a hanging system. Toiletry bags and cosmetic bags provide a volume of two to seven litres.

    Comfort features

    Many suitcases trump with an integrated expansion pleat for situational volume adaption. Reinforced carrying handles or a reinforcement of the back provide extra durability for textile models. Other typical features are external compression straps and a zippered front pocket. In general, softside luggage is much lighter than correspondingly large hardside suitcases. On the other hand, luggage with a hard shell is shock and impact resistant and therefore particularly suitable for sensitive contents. Whether made of nylon or plastic, modern trolleys have maneuverable, low-noise 360-degree wheels. Elastic cross-straps on the inside allow crease-free fixing of clothes and keep them in place because suitcases are filled while lying down but transported upright. Most suitcases are equipped with a (pull-out) address tag. The stepwise adjustable telescopic handle is standard. A mesh or linen compartment belongs to basic features as well. Larger luggage is often equipped with a comfortable side-carrying handle. Smart luggage impresses with a mobile loading station and/or built-in USB ports, as well as a removable power bank.

    Security features

    As a minimum level of security, serve lockable two-way zippers with special eyelets for a padlock. Special TSA locks are recommended for a plane trip: they can be unlocked by security officers with a master key. Some models have a built-in TSA lock. Smart luggage has sometimes a biometric version – in this case, the TSA lock is secured by the fingerprint of the owner or, if desired, by several fingerprints. If you do not want to lock your suitcase, practical luggage straps are a good option. They protect against unintentional opening during transport or luggage operations. More and more companies equip their suitcases with an RFID compartment that protects against digital scanning of bank and document cards. Tear- and cut-resistant materials and fasteners ensure even more safety. Not only suitcases and trolleys but also travel bags and backpacks are often equipped with a brand-specific ID code: This provides good service in case of loss or theft.

    Luggage sets

    With a suitcase set, you are not only completely equipped for the next trip: These travel companions are bought for many years. Cheap suitcases can quickly break down: You should prefer high-quality products from renowned brands. Luggage sets are particularly recommended for families and frequent travelers. They are designed to fit together harmoniously and look good at any airport or railway station. Another advantage of a suitcase set is its easy storage: the separate parts can be stowed inside each other to save space. The classic three-part sets are very popular. They usually consist of suitcases of different sizes. Feminine hardside luggage is often equipped with an additional cosmetic bag. If you want to carry the cosmetic bag as hand luggage, it must not contain products with a volume of more than 100 ml. Three-part textile luggage sets for men usually have a separate cabin bag with an adjustable shoulder strap. These are therefore often called flight bags.

    What to do in case of transport damage?

    The manufacturer warranty usually covers only defects in workmanship and material. Damage caused by accidents, abrasion or incorrect transport (e.g. by airlines) is excluded from the warranty. If you notice a defect when picking up your suitcase from the baggage carousel, you have seven days to report it to the airline. The report of damage must be made in written form via postal mail. Describe the damage and, if possible, include photos of the defective piece. The compensation for the damage (in form of a replacement or repair) is to be made directly by the airline. Many airlines offer a template for the damage report to download on their homepages. Alternatively, you can also report the damage or have it confirmed directly at the airport, by the airline or at the lost and found desk. The airline is responsible for your luggage during the flight. Train and bus companies are also liable if you can prove that they are directly responsible for the damage. In the case of package offers, it is the tour operator, who is responsible for damages.
