Rimowa classics: Aluminium Suitcases

Their features include lightweight and temperature sensitivity. Rimowa polycarbonate suitcases are also break-proof, extremely resilient and UV-resistant. Models from the Essential Lite line are particularly light: a Rimowa suitcase with a volume of over 80 litres weighs just about 3.5 kilos. Polycarbonate suitcases from the Essential Sleeve collection also have a special feature: they are equipped with a separate front compartment for laptop and documents and are therefore ideal for business travellers. Some suitcases from Rimowa are made of a combination from polycarbonate and aluminium. The models from the Hybrid series combine the best of both worlds and offer the greatest stability with low weight.

Bags and backpacks from Rimowa

In addition to cases made of aluminium and polycarbonate, Rimowa offers bags and backpacks. They also have the distinctive grooves, mostly as a structural pattern on the outer pockets as well as on the front side or both sides. Every Rimowa backpack and bag is designed travel-friendly. Whether shopper, backpack or shoulder bag, most models are equipped with a special strap on the back, with which they can be attached to the telescopic handle of a suitcase. A detachable address tag is also typical for a Rimowa backpack or tote bag. Rimowa bags and backpacks are made of robust and durable materials such as leather or canvas.

Rimowa: suitcases with cult status

The success story of Rimowa begins in 1898. At that time, the Cologne-based company produced leather horse harnesses and later switched to wooden suitcases covered with leather. So saddlery turned into a small suitcase factory, which became known as “Koffer- und Lederwaren-Fabrik Paul Morszeck GmbH” in 1908. Two decades later, the son of the founder took over the business. In 1931, he renamed the family company RIMOWA: the name is an acronym for RIchard MOrszeck WArenzeichen (the last one means "trademark" in German). The next change came in 1937 and involved the choice of materials: instead of leather and wood, the suitcase manufacturer chose aluminium. The legendary grooved pattern, however, was created only in 1950: Rimowa aluminium suitcases with a parallel folded structure on the surface are today the trademark of the company. The Rimowa logo contains two letters M and O (from Morszeck) and is reminiscent of the contours of Cologne Cathedral – as a sign of the connection with the history of this city.
