Leather belts belong to the classic accessories for men and women. The reasons for this are not only their noble appearance but also their high durability. They have it due to the excellent quality of the natural material. Leather belts are mostly cowhide belts, but there are also models made of calf, buffalo and goat skins. Genuine leather belts consist of at least 80% pure material. Each leather belt is unique thanks to the natural characteristics of the hide.
Belts made of smooth and suede leather
Whether cowhide belts or models made of other materials, leather belts are either made of smooth (grained side or top side of the skin) or suede leather (bottom side). Belts made of smooth leather have a flat, even surface. The smooth leather is often covered or embossed to give the belt a special surface. The label “smooth leather” also implies genuine leather in croco-look, patent leather, grained leather (natural or added) as well as embossed leather with different patterns such as saffiano. Suede leather (including nubuck and pull-up) is a smooth variant: the material stands out for its soft, velvety surface. You can recognize a belt made of suede by the so-called “writing effect”: if you swipe the surface with your forefinger (as if you would like to write something) you will see a trace in the stroke direction. Suede leather belts, no matter if ladies' belts or men's belts, look more casual than their counterparts made of smooth leather and are favoured as jeans belts. Classic leather belts are bonded to keep them flat and without seams. By using high-quality adhesive, these genuine leather belts hold without additional seam fixation. Leather belts that have a stitched edge appear more rustic, but can also complete classic looks, depending on the entire outfit.
Popular models for men and women
Belts add variety to the wardrobe: whether business belts, casual belts or fashion belts – the small accessory has a big effect and gives the final touch to every outfit. The leather belt in black or brown is a real all-rounder: you can easily convert it from a business belt to a casual belt. A braided belt can do also both: serious outfits and casual wear gain a fashionable look with this stylish accessory. Studded belts, belts with an XXL buckle as well as reversible belts inspire with their outstanding design and motivate to interesting looks. If you think that leather belts for men are nothing but practical accessories, you are completely wrong. Established models à la typical suit belts and business belts, as well as jeans belts and casual belts, are getting more and more competition from studded belts and patent leather belts. Men, who prefer the casual style go for braided models – these belts without holes can be optimally adjusted and score points with extra comfort. Reversible belts are also practical: they can be worn on both sides and thus offer many styling options.
How to care for leather belts
Leather belts are long-lasting accessories, but their care is often forgotten. As a rule, the following applies: leather belts that you wear often require less care than seldom worn pieces. If you wear your genuine leather belt regularly, it is enough to treat it once a year with a special care program. Whether lotion, cream or impregnation spray, the special products ensure a beautiful shine and prevent soiling. Please note for which type of leather the care products are intended. Smooth leather belts can be wiped clean with a damp cloth if necessary (do not rub!). If something remains behind, you can use a leather rubber. Suede leather belts require more care: a dirt-repellent impregnation is advisable. If the suede belt becomes soiled, you should never rub it – the stain will penetrate even deeper into the structure. It is better to remove the dirt carefully with a special brush. Don't forget to form your leather belts into a roll from time to time – this simple technique keeps them soft and flexible. You should also move the leather belt while applying care products. In this way they absorb deeper into the material and do not stay just on the surface.
