    Materials and features

    Depending on the intended purpose, specific materials offer an optimal basis for your travel backpack, because a city trip makes different demands than a trekking tour. For lovers of natural materials, backpacks made of leather or cotton or canvas are available. Unlike ordinary suitcases, suitcase backpacks have more separate compartments for small items such as wallets or smartphones. Usually, they are about 30 x 50 x 20 cm (W x H x D) and provide up to 45 litres of volume. Very practical are models with additional packing cubes or compression bags, which provide more space and order. More storage space is also no problem for modular backpacks with additional click-in parts. Rolltop travel backpacks with roll-in or roll-out wrap-around closure can also be expanded. Some models for Interrail adventures are equipped with anti-theft protection for a secure feeling on the road. This consists of a steel cable with a loop and/or puncture-proof materials and fasteners.

    Variants for business trips

    Business backpacks are usually plain and kept in discreet colours. The typical features of these models include a padded laptop compartment, at least one pen holder and a trolley strap. A power bank attachment and an RFID compartment are optional. Many business backpacks are equipped with stowable shoulder straps so that they can be quickly converted into a briefcase. Most Business versions also have a reinforced bottom and a practical two-way zip. Some of them are equipped with a brand-specific ID code for tracking.     Backpacks for outdoor adventures

    Outdoor backpacks differ a lot depending on the specific purpose. Models for day trips, also called daypacks, have a capacity of about 25 to 35 litres. Trekking tours lasting several days require touring backpacks with a volume between 30 and 50 litres. Larger trekking backpacks have a capacity of 50 to 70 litres and are intended for longer routes with a lot of equipment. The typical backpack for backpacking provides about 70 to 95 litres of volume. Backpacking rucksacks are practical for long tours with frequent changes of location. Note that large backpacks are considered check-in luggage. When you check in your luggage, make sure that all straps and belts are fixed and fit closely to the backpack. This prevents them from getting caught on the baggage carousel or during loading and, in the worst case, tearing off. As additional protection, you can – if available – use the rain cover. It covers all straps, buckles etc. so that the backpack is optimally prepared for the flight.

    Depending on the intended use, the characteristics of the various outdoor backpacks also differ. Common to all are water-repellent materials and an adjustable, ergonomic back system. Backpacks for women are designed following the female anatomy and are labelled as such. Trekking and backpacking backpacks with mesh backs provide good ventilation and are recommended when travelling to areas with high temperatures. Practically on every trip are 2-in-1 models. Travel backpacks with integrated daypack have a total capacity of up to 75 litres. The zipped or clicked-in daypack provides up to 15 litres of volume. As an alternative to the integrated daypack, a removable lid pocket is also available, although this is usually a little smaller.
