Especially durable and long-lasting models are characterized by exchangeable wheels and a screw-on telescopic handle. If any piece becomes defective, it can be simply removed and replaced with a new one.

Locking systems

Hard shell suitcases usually close with an integrated combination lock, often in the TSA version. TSA locks can be opened by security officers at an airport control. The softside luggage often has a circumferential, lockable two-way zipper. A separate padlock can be attached to this, optionally also a TSA lock.

Wheels

Suitcases and trolleys have either two or four wheels. Smaller models are equipped with two wheels as standard, larger versions usually have four wheels. In general, large rollers are better, as they do not get caught on paving stones and similar floors. Particularly high-quality wheels are made of plastic with a rubber coating. They are not only quieter, but also offer a better grip on the floor. The inline skates wheels have a ball bearing, which makes them much more stable and prevents them from swaying. The same effect can be achieved with double wheels. Two-wheeled trolleys usually have fixed, non-swinging rollers. Suitcases with four wheels can rotate 360 degrees and are therefore also called spinners (from the English "to spin"). This is also the reason for the difference in handling: 2-wheeled trolleys are pulled behind you, 4-wheeled suitcases are pushed upright beside you. Suitcases with four wheels are much more maneuverable and agile. However, four-wheeled models are less suitable for the uneven floor: You must lift them upstairs. With a two-wheel model, you can easily cross various barriers. On the ground with a steep incline, the four-wheeled suitcases tend to move on their own. We recommend models with feet or wheels that can be locked in place. Important: All external parts protruding from the suitcase are included in the dimensions.

Telescopic handle

Modern luggage has a metal telescopic handle with a plastic grip and can be locked in several positions. Here you have the choice between a single or a double frame. While in the first case one rod is pulled out telescopically and ends in a grip, in the second case it is two parallel rods that come together to form a handle. This variant is especially advisable for larger models, as it offers a little more stability. Also, smaller travel bags can be attached to the trolley strap. You must adjust the telescopic handle to suit your height. If you pull the two-wheeled trolley behind you with a hanging arm, it must not hit your feet. As a guideline: when pulling, there should be about one meter between you and the trolley case.

Features inside

Inner pockets provide a good overview and help to organize the content. Cross straps and room dividers prevent your things from getting out of place and guarantee a chaos-free arrangement. The pleasant extras include mesh pockets and a section for wet things. Some hardside luggage does not have an inner lining at all. It convinces with waterproof sealing along the case sides.

Luggage sizes: the right volume for every trip

Suitcases in the size S are optimal for short trips of two to three days. They offer a storage capacity of 20 to 29 litres and are approx. 50 to 59 cm high. A height of 55 cm corresponds to the hand luggage requirements of most airlines. If the journey lasts about a week, the M suitcases are a good choice. They are 60 to 69 cm high and can hold from 50 to 69 litres. The L size suitcases have a height of 70 to 75 cm and a capacity of 70 to 89 litres, making them suitable for a journey of one to two weeks. The XL and XXL suitcases are designed for travel adventures lasting several weeks: they have a capacity of up to 150 litres. By large suitcases, you must pay attention to the regulations for intercontinental flights. There are the highest allowed size, which is recommended by the IATA (International Air Transport Association) and measures currently 158 cm. To determine this size by your suitcase, you must add height, width and depth. All sizes that exceed the specified value of 158 cm are considered excess baggage and will incur extra charges.
