It offers several advantages compared with check-in luggage. For example, you avoid long waiting at the check-in counter on departure and at the baggage carousel after landing. Carry-on baggage is of course also suitable for short car trips and bus or train journeys. However, because its dimensions are adapted to the plane cabin, it is called cabin luggage. The synonym hand luggage indicates that these pieces of luggage are relatively light and can therefore also be carried in the hand.

    Carry-on luggage: What dimensions and weight are permitted?

Most airlines use the IATE (International Air Transport Association) guidelines as a basis. According to these guidelines, a cabin suitcase may not be larger than 55 x 40 x 20 cm. As a general rule, the total dimensions should not exceed 115 cm (width x height x depth). Important: The wheels, handles, side pockets etc. are included in these measurements. Other hand luggage dimensions concern foldable garment bags: they may not exceed 57 x 54 x 15 cm. As for the weight, according to IATE guidelines, your carry-on luggage should not weigh more than eight kilos. However, many airlines allow heavier baggage as long as it meets the dimensions, and you can lift and carry it on your own. It is best to check with your airline before flying. Some companies have different carry-on luggage regulations, depending on the ticket price, departure city, etc. Tip: Carry-on luggage is usually checked for the correct size before boarding with the help of a metal box. If you know the specifications of your airline, you can check your cabin baggage yourself using a suitable paper box. Remember that wheels and handles must also fit inside! If your cabin suitcase does not meet all hand luggage dimensions or specifications, it may only be flown as check-in luggage for a fee.

Other technical devices such as power banks, electric shavers or hairdryers are also best kept in your hand luggage. Liquids up to 100 ml should also be carried in a transparent bag in your cabin suitcase. Some cabin cases have a removable bag for liquids. Many items are prohibited in carry-on luggage aboard a plane. These are mostly explosive chemical substances and items similar to weapons or items that can be used as a weapon, such as hair dye, knitting needles, ice picks, golf clubs, etc. They may only be transported as check-in baggage.
