"Fashion for Future" is the motto of Melawear. The young label stands mainly for sustainable backpacks in a clean, minimalist look. The German brand convinces with an innovative sustainability approach that applies to all production stations. It also belongs to the pioneers in the production of backpacks made of certified Fairtrade and organic cotton. Every Melawear backpack carries the official seal "Green Button", which implies not only ecological but also social product criteria. Melawear is also a member of a partnership for sustainable textiles. The eco-friendly brand builds on principles of sustainable recycling management. To reduce waste and save resources, most parts of Melawear products are reusable, recyclable or biodegradable. They are therefore in a continuous cycle of materials. This also applies to the Melawear bestseller: all components of the Ansvar backpack are easily detachable and recyclable. The organic cotton can be recycled, the leather trim composted, the buckles reused for other Melawear backpacks.
Sustainable backpacks and more
Not only Melawear backpacks convince with their clean, puristic design – all products in the assortment of the German brand exude a minimalist, Scandinavian charm. The timeless design is part of the sustainable production concept: Melawear offers simple, durable products in excellent quality. Every Melawear backpack is impregnated with beeswax and therefore water-repellent. Almost every Melawear backpack is marked with the "MELA" logo. An exception are backpacks from the Ansvar series: they usually have the eponymous logo on the front. The Melawear Ansvar backpack was one of the first designs made of certified organic and Fairtrade cotton. Ansvar means "responsibility" in Swedish and Norwegian. The urban model combines a typical Scandinavian style with high ecological responsibility – hence the name. There are now several versions of the original model. The Ansvar 1 impresses with flexible volume adjustment thanks to its roll top closure, as well as soft back padding and practical laptop compartment. The Ansvar 2 features two large carrying loops and a removable seat cushion. The Melawear Ansvar backpack is also available in a mini version.The Mela series includes several backpack models. The vegan Mela 2 version offers a laptop compartment, separate cushion, key snake and padded carrying handle. The Mela 2 Mini is a small backpack with 8 litres volume. All Mela 2 backpacks can be recognized by their colour-contrasting edge piping. The Mela 5 series includes retro models with two symmetrical closure straps and a zippered side compartment. All Melawear backpacks, no matter from which series, are offered in many colours. Shoulder bags and sports bags complete the range of the eco-label. In addition to backpacks and bags, Melawear offers clothing and accessories for men and women. They also convince with good organization and high functionality. For example, the Ansvar 3 sports bag can be carried as a backpack on the back.
Melawear: Eco-friendly products for the mass market
Melawear was founded in 2014 by Henning Siedentopp. The word "mela" means "acting together" in Hindi. And this is exactly the aim of the German company. Melawear attaches particular attention to personal relationships with partners and suppliers. The corporate philosophy is based on sustainability, innovation and eco-friendly production. The brand is committed to attractive eco-fashion in puristic design – and to a new image of sustainable products, away from niche market and towards environmentally friendly mass market. The company was awarded the Science Award of the German state of Lower Saxony in 2015. In the same year, it was selected by the European Commission as one of the top 10 social innovators in Europe.
