TSA lock on the case: structure and function

A suitcase lock with TSA function is a special form of combination lock. The TSA-approved device for locking consists of three rotating metal discs, in each of which the numbers 0 to 9 are incorporated, a reset button and a slide with the opening for the master key. TSA lock cases are usually equipped with a two-way zip: The two zips snap into place in the lock when closed. As soon as the correct combination of numbers is set, they spring open and the case can be opened. Whether soft luggage or hard-shell models, the TSA security lock is embedded in the body: in some models it protrudes slightly, in others it is anchored flat. More and more manufacturers are opting for TSA cases with two locking mechanisms: these secure the main compartment and the front pocket. The TSA case lock is coded with a number combination for both chambers: depending on the sliding direction, one or the other lock can be opened.

The owner secures his belongings by means of a sequence of numbers determined by him, while the authorized security guard can open the luggage with a universal key. The appropriate key is determined by means of corresponding designations on the TSA combination lock: currently there are seven variants - from TSA001 to TSA007. Whether entering the U.S. or just making a brief stop, since 2002, the officials of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration have been authorized not only to screen baggage during inspections, but also to unlock it under certain circumstances - without asking the owner. However, the owner is informed of the search by a "Notice of Baggage Inspection". Some suitcases with a TSA lock have an additional viewing window, which shows in colour whether the baggage has been opened or not (green means "not opened", red - "opened").

Important: contrary to widespread opinion, there is no TSA security lock requirement when entering the USA. The TSA lock on the suitcase merely facilitates and accelerates the security checks for the traveler and for the airport staff. Several other countries have now adopted the TSA system, including Germany, Canada, Japan, Israel, Belgium, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia, Denmark, China and Finland.

Setting the TSA lock - this is how it works

Your new TSA lock case has arrived - now you have to set your personal number sequence instead of the starting combination 0-0-0. To do this, press the reset button until it clicks audibly and select the desired combination. Then move the opening slide in the direction of the arrow until the reset button springs back to the starting position. The TSA combination lock is now set to your desired combination. Then you can hook the zips into the lock to close the TSA lock case. If it is a case with a combination lock without an adjustment knob, proceed as follows: operate and hold the opening slide, set a personal numerical code and then release the slide. Since each manufacturer may have different procedures, it is worthwhile to take a look at the instructions.

Did you forget the code or did you accidentally reach the reset button and change the order? Don't panic: the case with TSA lock can be decoded. You have to try all 999 possible number combinations - from 0-0-0 to 9-9-9. As soon as the correct sequence is found (which can take up to an hour), you can open the case and set a new code. There is a faster method, however: Try to open the TSA combination lock by turning a number wheel at a time until it clicks - this approach works very well with some TSA case models.

TSA lock case: Which locks are approved?

One look at the suitcase lock is enough to determine whether the luggage has a TSA security lock. Two TSA lock manufacturers are certified by the US American authority: Travel Sentry and Safe Skies. You can recognize the Travel Sentry TSA luggage lock by the red diamond-shaped logo. The brand developed the TSA security lock and licenses this technology to other manufacturers. Officially recognized are also TSA locks of the Safe Skies brand: these are marked with a red torch symbol. In a case with a combination lock according to TSA technology, the locking mechanism is built into the case. However, it is possible to retrofit a suitcase with TSA lock. Separate TSA trailer locks are suitable for this purpose, which are attached to the zips by means of a steel cable or a metal bracket. Some models are four-wheeled and offer extra security. Among other things, the attached TSA security lock prevents the suitcase from opening during the hectic baggage handling at the airport. Another option is a luggage belt with TSA combination lock, which can be wrapped lengthwise or crosswise around the case or threaded through the handles. Models with an adjustment lock are particularly recommended, as they cannot be adjusted in length when closed and can therefore not be stripped off. Here too, there are models with a colour dot that indicates whether the TSA combination lock has been opened by security personnel or not. In addition, the colourful TSA lock straps make it easier to find the suitcase at the baggage claim area.

Advantages and disadvantages of TSA lock cases

The benefits of a suitcase with a TSA lock are obvious: unlike a padlock or ordinary combination lock, it can be opened by security guards with a TSA master key without damaging the lock or the luggage. If the TSA lock case is locked again after the check, the number combination determined by the owner is automatically set. The locked luggage is generally better protected against theft and abuse by criminals. Another advantage is that a suitcase with a TSA lock can be inspected very quickly - thus avoiding the annoying loss of time. With a TSA luggage lock you also don't have to worry about a key that is often lost or forgotten. Suitcases with TSA locking mechanism score with a wealth of different designs: whether in cabin size or XXL format, in muted tones or bright colours, as hard-shell suitcase or soft luggage - the choice is as varied as the wishes of the travellers.

The disadvantage of TSA lock cases is that they do not necessarily offer a higher level of security against unauthorized access: despite strict security precautions, it cannot be ruled out that the TSA master key may be illegally copied and misused by thieves.
