Kerbholz: the wooden watches
Wood comes in different forms and structures. But what is Kerbholz"? The term "Kerbholz" is German and comes from the Middle Ages. At this time, a piece of wood was used as a promissory note, with small furrows for the debts being cut into the wood. Seen from this perspective, the association with the brand is not particularly positive. Nevertheless, the name characterizes the young watch company, which simply turned the meaning around. Instead of debt, every notch should be a positive memory to remember. Every product thus represents a memorable piece of the beautiful hours. And to enable our future generations to gain positive experiences, the watch company Kerbholz is committed to environmental protection. Each sold product contributes to afforestation, recycling or research.
With this love for wood, it is self-evident that the wood comes largely from certified forestry. The natural quality is very important. Simple hard wax oil mixtures emphasize the special structure of the watches, and with beeswax everyone can care for the product at home. The simplicity is also found in the watches themselves - minimalist, valuable and made from environmentally friendly materials, the accessories of Kerbholz stand for that. The design is inspired by the Bauhaus school and is based on the uniqueness of the pure materials. The colour, grain, haptics and warmth can’t be compared with stainless steel, ceramic or plastic watches. Like leather bags, the watches gain more character after a certain time. They have a patina that makes them even more individual. Each Kerbholz watch is therefore unique.
The movement comes from Switzerland from the company RONDA and is protected in a metal core from the weather. In addition, every watch lover can decide whether he likes to wear a wooden bracelet or leather. Of course, the wood of the ladies' and men's watch can also be selected. Thus, the bright maple, the black sandal and red rosewood in the assortment, next to walnut and dyed variations of the wood species.
Wooden watches: an idea was born
The founders Matthias and Moritz saw after a trip to Mexico, what can be made of wood and that the potential of wood was not yet fully exploited in Germany. While in Mexico, cutlery, boats, jewellery and houses were made of wood, a rather insignificant attention came to the noble and versatile material in Germany. They decided to change this and introduced their first wooden sunglasses and watches in the market in 2012. Naturally the leading role in their products came to the wood. Meanwhile, two other friends have joined Matthias and Moritz, as well as other team members who brought the project forward. Likewise, new materials have entered the company, such as slate stone and cotton acetate.
